I have now stopped blogging on this account but I will leave it running.

Something I would have wanted to read when I was just starting out. A book that would encourage more people to engage with the wildlife on their doorstep, to see how fantastic nature is, and in turn want to protect the wildlife that they fall in love with.

It is mind blowing that on the 3rd July 2019 ‘Get Your Boots On’ will be released.

From the beginning I wanted the book to be packed full of information, helpful hints and photographs. Not something you had to read from front to back but a guide you just picked up when you wanted inspiration. I asked lots of people for advice, from people who work with wildlife in one way or another, people who spend time with wildlife as a hobby, people who make it their life to protect wildlife, as well as young people the same age, older or younger than me.

There were times when I didn’t think the book would become anything more than pages and pages of notes tucked into a folder in my bedroom, there were times when I was told how hard it is to get a book published and metaphorically patted on the head and told to forget the idea, but as every word of encouragement came in, as each contribution came back and more words came spilling out on to the page, I became more determined that I was actually going to get this finished.

The publishers received from me the words and my photos, together with a rough idea of how I wanted the layout. As soon as a few sample pages came back to me I was astounded. I never imaging seeing my photos and words looking so fantastically laid out.

It’s been what seems like a very long journey, umming and ahing over particular photographs, changing words here and there, rewriting sections that after consideration didn’t fit any more.

I’m really looking forward to revealing more about the content as July gets closer and if the book inspires just one extra person to become excited about nature and wildlife then I’ll be happy.
When I started Appleton Wildlife Diary 5 years ago I never imagined that I would still be writing it 5 years later.

Over the past 5 years I have had some amazing wildlife encounters, met some inspirational people and been involved in some great projects.

I must admit sometimes it has been a chore, I love the photography but going home and writing about it is harder, but then something inspires me and my enthusiasm is back again.

I’m passionate about getting other kids interested in wildlife and showing people that fantastic wildlife can be found on your Local Patch when you step outside and look, so I’m really pleased to announce that I have written a book about UK wildlife, for kids and teenagers, to encourage interaction with nature and to hopefully inspire more people to explore their Local Patch

The publishing contracts have been signed, but it will be 2019 before the book is on sale.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the support and the advice from everyone I have met over the past 5 years.

A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to be asked to do a presentation at the Launch Event of The State of Nature in Oxfordshire 2017.
We decided that rather than doing a presentation on the day that I would make a film in advance, that way I could put in some film clips of wildlife that I had taken on my local patch to show people how wonderful Oxfordshire’s wildlife is and also I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to take the afternoon off school.

You can see the film on my Wordpress website

https://appletonwildlifediary.wordpress.com/2017/03/23/state-of-nature-in-oxfordshire-2017/

The launch took place on 21st March at Blenheim Palace, with the first speaker being Professor David MacDonald, Director of WildCRU. Professor MacDonald spoke about how research in to wildlife is only the beginning, it is the partnerships between the researchers, landowners, farmers, volunteers and conservation management that will make a positive outcome for nature.

It was interesting to hear that a lot of Oxfordshire’s countryside is farmland and we have little actual ‘wild’ spaces.
The next speaker was Graham Scholey, technical adviser for the Environment agency. Then followed the film I had made for the event. Big thanks to my sister for filming me.The next two speakers were Martin Layer, the Planning and Estates Manager for Smiths Bletchington and Dr Judy Webb. Both spoke about nature reserves that I knew little or nothing about. Which made me think that if someone like me who regularly visits local nature reserves and seeks out wildlife hadn’t heard of these reserves then how do we promote nature reserves to the general public.

Perhaps that is an idea for future blogs – to visit all the nature reserves in Oxfordshire and blog about them.
Emma Marsh, regional directer for the RSPB, spoke last and summed up the general gist of the report.
The report not only outlines the loses and the gains in Oxfordshire’s biodiversity but also a call to action plan that involves the following key points

Urgently create larger and more connected high quality habitats

Find financially viable ways to help farmers manage land to benefit nature.

Improve practical support for communities

Ensure better planning for blue and green infrastructure

Put sustainable development that invests in nature at the heart of local decision-making

Increase access to green space and volunteering

Develop more collaborations within our strong and diverse sector

Continue to improve the methodology for monitoring the state of nature.

The few points that I picked up on during the event was that Nature, Politics and Money are all interlinked, fragmentation is a huge problem and sadly, like other conferences I have been to, the under 25’s are under represented.
It was a real privilege to be involved in the launch and my final words from the film are:

Just as I was walking past our conservatory, a fly flew straight in front of me and landed in a cobweb, it started to struggle, going round and round trying it's hardest to get away.

The Spider ran down the web from where she was hiding out under the window, she began to spin insanely round and round with the fly while wrapping the bottom half of the fly up in a few pieces of web.

Once the spider had secured the fly, it looked like she was feeding from the flies abdominal segment while the fly was thrashing it's legs about wildly.

After a bit the fly stopped moving so I ran inside to get a piece of white paper to put behind the window to make the photos clearer.

Richard Comont very kindly identified these as a house fly and a Zygiella x-notata (Missing Sector Orb Spider)

Just after the sun set we took the dogs across the field for their last walk of the day.
As all the Rooks settled into the Rookery and the Greylag geese flew overhead back to Farmoor reservior, a Litttle Owl started to call out of the darkness.
The little owl's call became clearer when I wandered around the bend in the field, leading me to believe the owl was on the fence post in the field of cows.
Once the Little owl fell silent the only sounds left were our wellies squelching through the mud made by todays earlier rain, the dogs rustling through the grass and cars driving up and down a nearby road.

As the season changes and the temperature is dropping, it feels like I need to start wear gloves and a hat.

I'm never sure whether I like the pylons across the valley. They are an interesting and familar sight to me but I often find them annoying when I'm trying to take photos of birds and the wire keep getting in the way.
Looking at all of the trails, tracks and signs I had an idea that we were getting a few different animals up on our allotment.

Yesterday I left the trail camera up at the allotment for 24 hours to see what happened.

First of all came a Green Woodpecker.

Next, most of the activity was between 7pm and 9pm where a Hare came through one end of the allotment and hopped towards the other end, then lots of clips of rats and rabbits. It's a good job this part of the allotment only has fruit trees in it.

We have definitely got a badger track through our allotment, I can see where the badger comes in from the brambles, walks through our allotment and out in to one of the unattended allotments opposite ours.
It was fantastic to actually get the badger on the trail camera. The first one came through around 2.30am, then another or the same one again at 5.30am.
Today we had a family walk with the dogs from Bablockhyth along the Bridle way all the way to Cumnor which is a four mile walk there and back.

Bablockhyth was once the site of a ferry across to Northmoor first mentioned around 1212, it remained in use until the 1960's.

I had plenty of time to slowly walk and take some shots of autumn, birds and the scenery.

As soon as we started to walk there was plenty of movement from the hedgerow all around, where lots of small birds were hopping about, including Robins, Chaffinches, Great tits, Blue tits, Tree creepers and Long tailed tits, all competing to be the loudest.

The Dunnock who sat at the top of the branch, singing and looking around won the competition

Flocks of birds were gathering in the ploughed fields near to where the path is, it's a bit difficult to tell what type of birds they are.

Along the footpath, the chattering of the Starlings and the loud shout of the Jays accompanied us.

Greater spotted woodpeckers, pheasants, geese, different types of fungi and what looks like a well, hidden away, made it an interesting walk.

Once I got home I did some research on the well. It is called a Physic well, a Holy well or Sacred spring. It is around 5 feet deep and it has a reputation for 'being good for eye troubles' other than that there isn't much written about it.

During the past couple of weeks the Rooks have been moving back into their winter rookery, which is opposite my house. It has been interesting to hear them back on the wires in the morning, to watch their acrobatics and in the evenings they gather in large numbers over the trees before they settle down for the night.

Over the summer the birds of prey have become quite used to the Rooks not being around but now they have returned it seems a constant battle for territory. The Buzzards have moved back a field but I expect they will be back along the roadside when the Fieldfares return.

The three Kestrels are really having a hard time and don't seem to get any time to hunt and the Red Kites are also being picked on, even the jackdaws side with the Rooks.

On Sunday I met up with four other young naturalists to do a podcast about children and nature for The Wildlife Trust. To start with I was quite nervouse, but Charlie soon put us all at ease. We answered lots of questions about what we thought could be done to encourage more children to enjoy nature.
On Monday evening I went to Oxford Natural History museum to listen to George McGavin do his talk on Monkey Planet. The talk was very engaging, I learnt loads about George himself and how he got in to wildlife and about the series, as well as insights in to how it was filmed, which I found the most interesting bit.

George McGavin is very amusing, interesting and informative, it was one of the best talks I have been to.

Back at the beginning of the summer I was approached while I was at one of the Badger marches, to see if I would be interested in taking part in a film for National Badger Day.

On the first day of the summer holidays I went down to Bristol with Elissa and Georgia to be filmed talking about our encounters with Badgers. I talked about this years cubs and how long I have been watching my local Badgers.

National Badger Day is a celebration of this wonderful creature which should be protected and celebrated not persecuted.

A few trailers have been released over the last couple of weeks but today is when the film came out.
It has been a real privilage to be part of this as I am very passionate about Badgers and I hope this film shows everyone how brilliant Badgers are.

Here is the link

There are lots of events going on today and over the next few days that you can join in with or you could support your local Badger group.

As soon as I got home from school I went into the back garden as the birds were making so much noise.

Both our garage roof and next doors garage roof were covered with Chaffinches, Great tits and Blue tits. There were also birds on the fences and in the trees.

All the birds seemed to be hopping up and down picking something off the leaves, garage roof and between the fence panels.

Our garden Robin didn't seem very impressed and spent the whole time trying to chased away all the birds.

My guess is that after so many dry days over the past few weeks and then it has been raining all day, all the spiders or little bugs have come out and that's what all the birds are after.

Am I close?

Yesterday I had the afternoon off school due to open evening, so the school closed early, giving me time to walk around the wood without rushing before it got dark.

Amelia and I had a great time wandering around and playing on the rope swing in the woods. Three hours went very quickly

I was out looking for anything that caught my eye, but particularly Fly Agaric as I know where a patch appears every year under the pine trees. It looked like something had been nibbling them.

A lot of the leaves on the trees are just starting to turn brown and when the wind blew great patches of leaves fell.

All the dry fallen leaves on the floor isn't very helpful when I'm trying to be quiet and creep close to get a photo of a bird or animal. I could hear the Goldcrests in the trees but couldn't get anywhere near them.

We found a few Barn owl feathers in a place where I regularly find feathers from a Barn owl, but I have never actually seen one around that area, but I don't often go there at dawn or dusk.

Out in the field, on the way back home, three Kestrels were hunting, one female and two males. They were using the telegraph wires to sit on, then swooping down into the field after something, only to return without catching anything.

The night before we popped in to the woods to see if the badgers were around. After about 5 minutes these three came out, along with the cub and its mum. A couple of the badgers were picking off the blackberries with their teeth from the bush behind the sett.
At one stage we had eight badgers around us.
I put my trail camera out at the side of our garden and was happy to see the badgers still come up to visit us, even though it is at 3am.

Woodfest is a celebration of the woodland and it's creatures in my local wood, to show members of the public what they can see when they visit.

I helped out on the Oxfordshire Mammal Group stall to promoted what the group do and encourage people to join or come to some of their talks.

(The next one is George McGavin on 12th October, which I'm really looking forward to. http://www.oxonmammals.org)

Other stalls at Woodfest included Forest School, Butterfly Conservation, Moths, Wilderness Pioneers and The Wood Conservation Group.

It was so nice to see so many people enjoying walking around the wood.

Woodfest was completely different to Saturday when I had the wood and the fields to myself.
Mum and I spent 3 hours just sitting watching the Hares and wandering around the fields.

There are so many Jays around in the trees at the moment after the acorns.

The Jays have competition for the acorns from the squirrels, this one sat in the tree above our heads and was chattering while flicking its tail, which is an alarm call, although it sounded more like it was telling us off.
This female Kestrel hunts near to the Hare field every day. On Saturday it was chasing the Yellow hammers and other small birds up and down the hedgerow.
Sometimes the small birds gang up on her and chase her away.
There were 4 Hares out on Saturday afternoon, it was a bit earlier than we normally go to see them.
I found was interesting to see how when the sun came out the hares were more active and hopped about eating, but when the sun went behind a cloud, the Hares laid down so I couldn't see them.

H3 and her mate came over a few times and the Hares hid in the grass. When two male Pheasants starting fighting and making a lot of noise all the Hares ran into the maize.
It is a sure sign that Autumn is on its way when the whole garden is layered with dew covered Spiders webs. Every fence, every tree, every flower and gate.

Dew is water that forms into droplets due to condensation, which appear on small thin objects like Spiders webs.

On one of the fence posts, a Female Cranefly or Daddy long legs Tipula paludosa sat, her wings glittered with tiny balls of water. The female has the abdomen end that looks like a stinger. September is the month where the number of Craneflies peak. The adults eat nectar, whereas the larvae, Leatherjackets eat the roots of grasses.

Since the weekend we have been putting the trail camera out in different places to try and get an idea where the badgers go at what time.

I was lucky enough to get a quick view of a fox on one of the cameras.

I am also trying to build up a log of the different badgers on my local patch to see if I can start recognising some.

I am really pleased to see that this years cub is growing strong. It is still pottering about with its mum. Back in the spring there were two cubs but I haven't seen the other one since May. I only saw it once.

A badger has been coming up to just behind our garden and snuffling around in the grass. It completely ignores the fallen apples.

I have also been looking into what badgers eat. Out in the field they are eating a lot of the maize and other crops as well as blackberries. I can tell this by what they leave in their latrines.
Out in the field I put down a small handful of peanuts, a pile of windfall apples and a pile of windfall plums. The badger really seems to enjoy the plums. I can't work out whether they eat the stone or not. They don't touch apples.

In all three places I have been noting the times the badgers appear. It seems like they come to a patch, go away, and then visit the same patch a couple of times during the night and in to the early morning.

One thing I noticed on one of the clips was a badger lifting up its leg, holding it for a moment then walking off. I have seen badgers squat to go to the toilet, but do male badgers cock their leg like dogs or do both sexes squat?

The River Thames becomes a lot wider and has less plants on the river bank after Eynsham lock. On the way there are lots of Narrow boats and a caravan park.
The river bends as it goes passed Farmoor Reservoir which is where we saw the Cormorant.
We only saw two Kingfishers, but there were about five Herons.
Thank you to Wildlife Kate's website for the information on the difference between a male and female Kestrel.
www.wildlifekate.wordpress.com
This is a male because he has a grey head and spots on his back.
We watched this Kestrel as we were waiting for our turn in Pinkhill Lock
The Kestrel in my slideshow is a female.
