Over the weekend

Saturday morning was spent at a local lake, the weather was sunny but cold first thing.
In the morning you could see the mist lifting off the lake.
There were lots of birds around including Great crested grebes, coots, cormorants, geese and ducks.

Canada Geese

Greylag Goose

We saw this bird on the old boating lake. I have looked in all my books but can't find it.
After looking on the internet I think it maybe a Coscoroba swan but I would be gratefully if somebody would tell me what it is.

This is a new bird for my feeders in the garden.
If you look carefully at it's leg you can see it has been ringed.
I am not sure whether this bird is a Linnet or Lesser redpoll

Not doing very well with identification today but I think this could be Tremella mesenterica, yellow brain.

One of the casualities of the recent weather is the owl box across the road from our house.
The fields are quite open and the wind and rain drives up across from the River Thames.
There was a dead bird and some eggs in the box but they looked like they were from last year.

  1. I also think it is a Coscoroba swan because of the red beak.

  2. I don't think it's a swan Alex. Doesn't look swanny enough! More goosey. Maybe and Egyptian goose?

  3. It's in its winter plumage.

  4. I've had a few people say it's a domestic greylag goose and the other one is a Redpoll

  5. Hi Alex have a look at this photo. The giveaway is the eyepatch and the colour of the beak.
